About Bahamas

The 700 beautiful islands and 2,000 chunks of coral and limestone outcrop that form The Islands of The Bahamas are playgrounds for sailors, anglers, divers, nature and adventure lovers, eco-tourists and holidaymakers in search of the life’s pleasures.

The islands are visited by more than three million people each year. You will find great enthusiasm for American culture, combined with a strong flavour of Britain.

Just 30 of the islands are populated and they are among the most favoured destinations for cruise ship passengers. New Providence has almost 60 per cent of the population. In its capital, Nassau, you can go on a horse-drawn carriage tour of a vibrant city filled with history – Victorian buildings, fortresses and a library that used to be a prison.

Cross a bridge and you are on Paradise Island, a modern dream resort tailor-made for fun-seekers, featuring a 50,000 sq ft (4,650 sq m) casino, a marina for large yachts, the world’s biggest aquarium and palatial hotels – or you might prefer the casinos of Cable Beach. And that’s just the beginning. Shop in one of our duty-free stores or in the Straw Market, one of the largest in the Caribbean.

Island hop to Grand Bahama, where you can try your luck at the slot machines or on the gaming tables in Freeport, the second largest city in The Bahamas, and spend your winnings in the International Bazaar. Visit the Lucaya Marketplace and marina and enjoy open air dining after browsing our duty-free stores. Or simply relax on one of our beautiful beaches, one of which has been named among the top 10 in the world.

Beyond these best-known vacation destinations are many serene island gems, known as the Out Islands. You can sail into 30 marinas on the Abacos Islands; dive in the 6,000ft (1,828m) Tongue of the Ocean trench which lies between the Berry Islands and Andros where you will find the Andros Barrier Reef, the third largest in the world. Fish for the biggest and best marlin and tuna in Hemingway’s haunts off Bimini; admire the cliffs on Cat Island; surf in the giant waves of Eleuthera; take a ferry to Harbour Island and enjoy the pink sand beaches. Explore the Exumas by sail or with a snorkel; swim in the clear waters of Long Island, and catch the spectacular view from Dixon Hill lighthouse on San Salvador, known as the Island of Discovery.

You will need many more trips just to scratch the surface of the possible activities and sights on The Bahamas. You’ll find an extraordinary combination of activities, cultures and landscapes to suit anyone in search of simple of sophisticated pleasures and all in perfect Caribbean climate.

San Salvador, or Watling’s Island, is the most popular nomination for Christopher Columbus’ first landfall on his 1492 voyage in search of a western route to India.

The Bahamas became the New World’s first republic when it was settled by English Puritans.

In the 16th century, pirates set false lights to lure ships on to the reefs and steal their cargoes. Blackbeard mounted his raids from Nassau.

Off Abacos and Eleuthera, divers can see the wrecks of two trains, which sank while being transported.

Underwater visibility in the Bahamian seas is perfect for diving – often more than 100 feet (30m).
